Here is a photo by Philip R. Hastings. It was included in a six-page camera study entitled "Pennsy Photo Section" that was published originally in the August 2001 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 36. Partial Caption: "For the Chicago Railroad Fair of 1949, this locomotive ~ in reality, No. 8063 ~ was given the number of a famous sister, engine 7002. In 1905, the 7002 made headlines with an ultra-fast run across western Ohio on the crack 'Pennsylvania Special.' The 7002 was cut up in 1934, so 8063 was given her identity for the Fair." It's presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. |

Partial Caption: "We're aboard the lead E-7 diesel of PRR Train 32, the eastbound 'St. Louisan,' on a drizzly day in 1956. Just behind us are two more E units, 16 cars, and the tunnels at Gallitzin, summit of the main line over the Alleghenies. . . . This routine conquering of the Allegheny Mountains ~ the great barrier to early commerce ~ was why the original Harrisburg-Pittsburgh portion of the PRR was built." |

Partial Caption: "Portia Mitaritono, an employee at PRR's Sunnyside Coach Yard in Long Island City, N.Y., cleans the running gear of a GG-1 electric locomotive in 1943." Partially visible here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4863, a GG-1 built in Juniata in January of 1938 and rated at 4,620 horsepower. |
