Excursion Train At Horseshoe Curve, 1987
Description:
Here is an original 35mm color slide by Paul Carpentino that was taken while riding in an excursion train at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 1 November 1987. Prominent here is former Pennsylvania Railroad engine #7048, an EFS-17M road switcher built by GM-EMD in December of 1955, rated a 1,750 horsepower, later owned by the Penn Central Railroad and Conrail, and finally enshrined at the Curve on 5 September 1985. Wave to the Railfans!

Here is page one of a three-page article by Denis Connell entitled "Altoona Sunday!" It was published originally in the January 1988 issue of "Railpace Newsmagazine," page 22. Partial Caption: "Conrail SD40 helpers 6296-6290 assist restored PRR E8's 5898-5706 on a seventeen-car consist around Horseshoe Curve on November 1, 1987." From here, it's up to Gallitzin, through one tunnel, around the wye, through the New Portage Tunnel, down "The Mountain" and around the Curve to Altoona.

Conrail moves 50-60 trains per day over this important East-West rail link that has served continuously since 1854. The Railroaders Memorial Museum operates a year-round Visitor Center, Gift Shop, and Funicular at the site. Photo by H. Mark Weidman." Kittanning Mountain embraces the Curve's apex. At the right of the Mountain is Kittanning Run, route of the Kittanning Indian Trail and headwaters of the Juniata River which flow into Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic.

Here is the ninth of nine photos that were published originally in David W. Seidel's 2008 book entitled "Images Of Rail: Horseshoe Curve," page 93. Shown here is former Pennsylvania Railroad engine #7048, an EFS-17M built by GM-EMD in December of 1955 and rated a 1,750 horsepower. In this photo taken on 5 September 1985, it is waiting to be pushed up the mountain to the Horseshoe Curve to replace K-4S "Pacific" #1361 and, thereby, become the new commemorative locomotive. Photo taken just East of the 24th Street Bridge.
