"Second Engine 28," Pages 42-43, 1975 |

Here is a slightly-cropped version of Howard Fogg's painting called "Broadway Limited." It was utilized as part of a ten-page cover article by John R. Crosby entitled "Second Engine 28: Three Fingers Down On The Rump Meant 3 Minutes Late." It was published originally in the March 1975 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 42-43. Depicted here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5471 and #5352. Both are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics." #5471 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in March of 1927 and retired in August of 1956, while #5352 was built in Juniata in March of 1924 and retired in February of 1950. At the left is PRR engine #8797, an H-10S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Lima Locomotive Works as Vandalia number "155" in August of 1916, renumbered PRR "8797" in 1917, and renumbered "9987" in 1951. |

Here is a photo that was published originally in the March 1975 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 2. Partial Caption: "The first E-60CP electric locomotive to bear Amtrak colors poses for an official portrait on the test track outside of General Electric's plant at Erie, Pa., in November 1974. Twenty-six of the 71-foot-long units are scheduled to succeed most of the former Pennsy GG-1's now in Amtrak service in the Northeast Corridor. The first 15 E-60CP's have water (4800-gallon) and fuel (500-gallon) tanks for steam heating of trains; the others are equipped with a motor alternator set to provide auxiliary power for electric train heating." Shown here is Amtrak engine #951, an E-60CP built by GE during November of 1974. |

Photo Caption: "The engine crew of this Class L 2-8-2 appear to be as interested in the group of photographers as the photographers are in capturing the crew's engine, the 1487, slugging through Horseshoe Curve on November 20, 1947." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1487, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during January of 1917 and retired in October of 1956. |

It was published originally in Mike Schaffer & Brian Solomon's (1997) book entitled "Pennsylvania Railroad," page 22. Photo Caption: "Nearly all freights making the westbound climb out of Altoona were (and still are) assisted by a set of helper locomotives pushing at the hind end of the train. On this day in July 1948, no less than three locomotives ~ two of them running in reverse ~ help a freight achieve the summit." Partially visible at the left is Pennsylvania Railroad N-5 cabin car #477630. |
