Shown here (R to L) are eight Pennsylvania Railroad electric engines: #4720, #4708, #5689, #3915, #4704, #4768, #3900, and #3917. #4720, #4708, #4704, #4768 are P-5A's built in 1932 and rated at 3,750 horsepower each. #4720, #4708, and #4704 were built by Baldwin-Westinghouse ~ but #4768 was built by General Electric. #5689, #3915, #3900, and #3917 are B-1's built by Juniata. #5689 was built in 1934 ~ but #3915, #3900, and #3917 were built in 1926.

Here is page eight of a 15-page booklet published by the Pennsylvania Railroad entitled "Modern Cars And Locomotives: 1926." Depicted here are PRR engines #6556, #3976-3977, and #3914-3915. All were built in Juniata. Engine #6556 is a C-1 (0-8-0) switcher built in May of 1925 and retired in January of 1949. Engines #3976-3977 are DD-1 (2-B+B-2) electrics built in July of 1910 and rated at 3,160 horsepower. #3976 was transferred to the Long Island Rail Road in April of 1928 and renumbered "350-B," but #3977 was retired in January of 1949. Engines #3914-3915 are B-1 (C) switchers built in June of 1926 and rated at 570 horsepower each. #3914 was retired in December of 1962, while #3915 was retired in January of 1963.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3931 and a steam locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #3931 is the FF-1 (1-C-C-1) electric built in Juniata during April of 1917, rated at 4,800 horsepower, and retired in April of 1940 after 23 years of faithful service. Actually, #3931 is the prototype for a class of electric freight engines when the PRR was considering extending electrification from Harrisburg/Enola to Pittsburgh/Conway ~ a project that never materialized, due largely to a lack of revenue resulting from the Great Depression.

Both are DD-1 (2-B+B-2) electrics built in Juniata during May of 1911, rated at 4,000 horsepower total, and presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. Here, they're utilized only for maintenance work in the East and Hudson River Tunnels.

Photo Caption: "Manhattan Transfer when it was new: DD-1 No. 12 arrives with an express that includes all-steel Pullman parlors behind the engine." #12 actually consists of #3956 and #3957. Both are DD-1 (2-B+B-2) electrics built in Juniata during July of 1910 and rated at 3,160 horsepower; both were transferred to the Long Island Rail Road in January of 1928 and renumbered: #3956 became "347-A" and #3957 became "347-B."

Once upon a time, there was a two-unit DD-1 numbered "3977" on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

It was published originally in the October 1956 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 32. Painting Caption: "The common meeting ground of K-4 Pacifics and DD-1 electrics was Manhattan Transfer, an engine-change point just east of Newark whose high-level platforms could be reached only by rail. 'Trains' commissioned Artist George Gloff to re-create that era." Depicted here are PRR engines #5426 and #24. #5426 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1927 and retired in August of 1956. #24 actually consists of #3980 and #3981. Both are DD-1 (2-B+B-2) electrics built in Juniata during July of 1910 and rated at 3,160 horsepower; both were later transferred to the Long Island Rail Road and renumbered: #3980 became "360-A" and #3981 became "356-B."
