Album Info:Here is a four-page article by Ms. Helen Thomson entitled "The Black Wall." It was published originally in the March 1953 issue of "Trains & Travel" magazine, pages 27-30. It recounts the predictable and preventable tragedy that occurred in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on Friday, 31 May 1889. "The admirable solid stone masonry of the Pennsy's new arch bridge formed a horror cauldron when it walled-up 2000 human beings who thought they could trust the South Fork Dam." (Pages 27-28)

Illustration Caption: "Pennsylvania's class R Consolidation was only four years old when the water took its toll." Illustrated here is PRR engine #400, a Class R (2-8-0) built in the Altoona Machine Shops during October of 1885 and retired in July of 1914 after 29 years of extraorinary service.
