7th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during August of 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engine #5706 and two other units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by EMD. #5706 is an EP-22 built in 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 7th Street Bridge with a long passenger train, and will soon stop at the Altoona Station on their way to Pittsburgh and points West. In the background, a mixed-cargo freight train headed by PRR engine #7140 waits patiently for orders to proceed. |

Here is an original 35mm color slide by M.E. Brouse that was taken just East of the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 1 November 1987. Shown here (R to L) are former Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5898 and #5706. Both are E-8A's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each; #5898 was built in March of 1951, while #5706 was built in October of 1952. At the time this photo was taken, they were owned by the Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad and are seen pulling the 17-car "Horseshoe Curve Excursion" down the Allegheny Mountains and will soon stop at the Altoona Passenger Station before returning to Hamburg. |
