Here is a photo taken by Bob Lorenz that was published in David W. Seidel's 2008 book entitled "Images Of Rail: Horseshoe Curve," page 34. Partial Caption: "A westbound consist with a specialty shipment is led by Class J-1 No. 6438 in this morning view during the late 1940's or early 1950's." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6438 is a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during October of 1943 and retired in April of 1958 after just 15 years of revenue service. Note the second "car" in the train: a refurbished "Lines West" locomotive tender. |
