Here is page three of a four-page article by Frederick Westing entitled "Birth Of The Broadway." It was published originally in the March 1952 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 54. Photo Caption: "In this rare photo of 1910 taken near the Zoo interlocker, the Pennsylvania Special is being hauled by J-28 class No. 2761, a big Prarie type demonstrator built for the road by Alco. The 80"-drivered 2-6-2, similar to New York Central power of that period, did not last long." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #2761, a J-28 (2-6-2) "Prairie" built by the American Locomotive Company during July of 1905, renumbered 02761 in 1918, and retired in November of 1921 after just 16 years of experimental service. |
