PRR 8664, AS-18AM, 1959
Description:
Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 May 1959. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8664, #8658, and #8670. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8664 was constructed in February of 1958, #8658 in January of 1958, and #8670 in March of 1958. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers on a train of empty freight cars on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the pushers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Photo taken just West of the 24th Street Bridge. William E. Burket Collection.
