Title:
PRR 6443, J-1, 1949
Description:
FM. Here is a duplicate 35mm B&W slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Altoona, Pennsylvania. Photo Caption: "29-car express train hauled by a T-1 and a J-1 about four miles below the Horseshoe Curve. November 1, 1949." Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6443 and a "Duplex" whose road number is not recorded. #6443 is a J-1 (2-10-0) "Texas" built in Juniata in November of 1943 and retired in April of 1958 after just 15 years of service. This photo comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (22-57).

Title:
PRR 6443, J-1, c. 1951
Description:
Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken just West of SLOPE Tower in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6443, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during November of 1943 and retired in April of 1958 after just 15 years of service. It's just come down the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a mixed-cargo freight bound for Altoona and points East. Two points of interest here. First, there's a streecar being transported on the first car of the train. And second, there's a Brakeman riding on a boxcar's roof about twelve cars back! Roy Healey Collection; #8 of 9.
