Description:  A-Prints. Here is a print by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1946. Partially visible here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3554, an H-9S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata as H-8B number "6605" during November of 1911, renumbered "3554" in 1913, rebuilt as an H-9S in February of 1917, and retired in September of 1949 after 38 years of faithful service. In this context, it's about to pass under the 9th Street Footbridge on its way to Altoona's Passenger Station. Visible in the background is the 7th Street Bridge. Brad Mann Collection.

Description:  A-Prints. Here is a print by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken just East of the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1946. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4371 and another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #4371 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during January of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in March of 1943, and retired in December of 1957 after 34 years of faithful service. In this context, they're about to pass SLOPE Tower with a freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Five tracks over and heading in the opposite direction, a passenger train with streamlined cars will shortly stop at Altoona's Passenger Station. Brad Mann Collection.

It was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as a BP-60 passenger engine rated at 3,000 horsepower in November of 1948, later regeared and reclassified as a 2,250 horsepower BH-50 for freight and helper service, and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of service. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8662 was built in January of 1958 while #8676 was built in March of 1958. In this context, they're serving as tail end pushers on a mixed-cargo freight train that's heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the pushers will be uncouple and returned to East Altoona for further assignment.
