Album Info:Here is a two-page camera study entitled "They Called Her The Big Engine." Text by David P. Morgan, photo by H. Di Rocco. It was published originally in the May 1965 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 48-49. "Way back before the great war, when world fairs were still fun to go to, an extraordinary exhibit was referred to as simply 'the big engine.' For at the New York World's Fair in 1939, under steam and on rollers with all wheels turning, paced 140 feet 2-1/2 inches' and 530 tons' worth of streamlined steam locomotive." (Page 48)

Partially visible here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6100, the S-1 (6-4-4-6) "Big Engine" built in Juniata in January of 1939 and retired in January of 1949 after just ten years of experimental service. It's on display at the New York World's Fair in 1939.
