Here is the fourth of four original photos by Douglas C. Jones that were taken at the 24th Street Turntable in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #646, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during March of 1918 and retired in November of 1957 after 39 years of faithful service. It's parked in the Westbound Locomotive Ready Tracks, awaiting its next passenger helper assignment up "The Mountain." Visible in the left background are several homes situated on Tenth Avenue. The blurry streaks in the photo are the tracks of snowflakes on a frigid winter's day! |
