Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "Spirit of St. Louis." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Pennsylvania Railroad train No. 31, 'Spirit of St. Louis,' backs into Union Station of its namesake city after the run from New York City. Locomotives on this day, October 9, 1965, are an E-8, an E-7B, and an E-7." Photo by David Shay. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5894, #5858-B, and another unit whose number is not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5894 is an EP-22 built in March of 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower, while #5858-B is an EP-20 built in february of 1948 and rated at 2,000 horsepower.

Revised Caption On Reverse: "'Diesel Helpers' descending the mountain after helping a [freight] train over the Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, Pa. Photo by Sheldon L. Burns." Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #7132 and two more "Geeps" whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EFS-17M's built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7132 was built in June of 1957. The date is an approximation.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "Diesels on West Slope of Horseshoe Curve." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Diesel freight descending the West Slope of the Horseshoe Curve just west of Altoona, Pa. Photo by Sheldon L. Burns." The numbers of these three Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives are not recorded, but all of them were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. The date is an approximation.

Description:  Aerotrain. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 19 September 1956. The photographer is not identified. Shown here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Aerotrain," built by General Motors during July of 1955. It is on its daily eastward journey from Pittsburgh to New York City, and will soon pass through the New Portage Tunnel under the town of Gallitzin (partially visible in the distance). Photo taken from the State Route 53 Bridge.

Description:  Aerotrain. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken near Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, in November of 1956. The photographer is not identified. Prominent here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Aerotrain," built by General Motors during July of 1955. In this context, it's being towed to Enola by PRR engine #5581 ~ a BS-10A built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in April of 1950 and rated at 1,000 horsepower.

Description:  TRB. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Rockville Bridge near Marysville, Pennsylvania, perhaps in 1954. The photographer is not identified. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1192, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during May of 1915 and retired in February of 1955 after 40 years of faithful service. In this context, it's running backwards across the Bridge toward the Enola Yards with a string of empty hopper cars.

Description:  Sweetland. Here is the third of five successive 35mm color slides of photos by David R. Sweetland that were taken near Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, on 26 August 1956. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4671 and another "Decapod" whose road number is not recorded. #4671 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during November of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in March of 1941, and retired in November of 1958 after 35 years of faithful service. In this context, they're ore train helpers placed ahead of the cabin car.

Description:  Huntingdon. Here is the first of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides by Nelson Bowers that were taken near Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, in January of 1956. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6816, an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1926 and retired in June of 1959 after 33 years of faithful service. The head-end brakeman has made the cut between the tender, and will soon throw the switch so as to pick-up the boxcar on the left.
