Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4311, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during November of 1922, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in August of 1934, and retired in October of 1959 after 37 years of faithful service. It's pulling a northbound coal train. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-15).

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8626, #8620, and #4311. #8626 and #8620 are AS-18M road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8626 was constructed in February of 1957, while #8620 was built in August of 1956. These diesels were summoned to assist this northbound coal train after the steam-powered pusher locomotive became disabled. #4311 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S in November of 1922, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in August of 1934, and retired in October of 1959 after 37 years of faithful service. Description:  Here is the first of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Philip R. Hastings that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1955. Shown across Burgoon Run is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6402, a J-1A (2-10-4) "Texas" steam locomotive built in Juniata during 1943 and retired in April of 1958 after just 15 years of revenue service. It's pulling a long string of empty hopper cars, and will soon round the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania.
