Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9600 and an "AF" Class B-unit whose number is not recorded. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9600 is an AF-15 built in July of 1948, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963. In this context, it's crossing the Rockville Bridge with a mixed-cargo freight train out of Enola on its way to Renovo and points North. Note that one of the original four mainline tracks has been removed.

NST. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken from the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 May 1959. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9600 and another "AF" Class unit whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9600 is an AF-15 constructed in July of 1948, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963 after just 15 years of service. In this context, they're passing SLOPE Tower with a mixed-cargo freight train on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible at the right is the pit where a turntable was once situated; it was used to turn returning steam locomotives around in preparation for their next helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." 4th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during January of 1961. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #9617, #9602-B, and #9603. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9617 is an AF-16 built in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #9602-B and #9603 are AF-15's built in 1948 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9607 is an AF-15 built in 1950 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #9614-B is an AF-16 built in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. They have just passed under the 4th Street Bridge with a mixed-cargo freight train on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West.
