LIRR "Present-Day Roster," Page 25, 1963
Title:  LIRR "Present-Day Roster," Page 25, 1963
Description:  Here is page one of a three-page article by Sy Reich entitled "Long Island Rail Road: Present-Day Roster." It was published originally in the April 1963 issue of "Railroad" magazine, page 25. Photo Caption: "Sixteen-hundred Alco horses pant briefly at LIRR's Cold Spring Harbor station before climbing the grade to Huntingdon." Photo by Gene Collora. Prominent here is LIRR engine #1552, an AGP-16MSC built by the American Locomotive Company in September of 1955 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. (NOTE: There's a typographical error in the "Diesel Locomotives" table: the Railroad Class for the 1600 HP Alco RS-3 should be "AGP-16msc," not "AGP-15msc.")

Description:  Agnes. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 June 1972. Shown here near the 4th Street Footbridge are Penn Central engines #5451, #9944, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Although coupled to a fully-loaded mineral train, they're just sitting there with engines off pending the resumption of rail traffic in the wake of Hurricane Agnes. Note how rusty these once-highly-polished rails have become!

PC 7948, GP38-2, 1972
Title:  PC 7948, GP38-2, 1972
Description:  Agnes. Here is the first of two successive original photos that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 June 1972. Shown here near the 4th Street Footbridge are Penn Central engines #7948 and #2438. They're departing the Yard on their way up the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a "high-and-wide extra" bound for Pittsburgh and points West. It's just about the only thing moving out of Altoona in the wake of Hurricane Agnes. In this context, the Fireman has just received train orders from the WORKS Tower Operator. When the end of the train and the cabin car reach this point, the train's Conductor will also receive orders by the same means. The elaborate light tower depicted at the right was constructed originally for the New York World's Fair in 1939 and was re-erected here after the Fair closed.
