Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "Horseshoe Curve." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Eastbound locomotives passing the Pride & Joy of the P.R.R. K-4s #1361 on the world-famous Horseshoe Curve." Pictured on the left is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918 and retired in May of 1956 after 38 years of faithful service. Pictured on the right is Penn Central Railroad engine #6040 and perhaps two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #6040 is an SD-40 built (for the PRR) in February of 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower. The photographer's name and the exact date are not recorded.

Description:  Here is the front cover of Charles S. Roberts' 1997 book entitled "Triumph I: Altoona To Pitcairn 1846-1996." Partial Cover Caption: "Bitter winter weather remains another obstacle to any mountain crossing, no less so for PRR on this or any other day. On 10 February 1968, units 6046, 2425, 2503, and 2205 with a westbounder have just topped the grade as they exit Allegheny Tunnel, PRR's first bore at Gallitzin. The summit is precisely at the portal behind the locomotives." Shown here (L to R) are Penn Central engines #6046, #2425, #2503, and #2205. #6046 is an SD-40 built by GM-EMD in 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower. #2425 is a C-425 built by the American Locomotive Works in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #2503 is a GF-25 built by General Electric in 1962 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #2205 is an EF-22 built by GM-EMD in 1963 and rated at 2,250 horsepower.

Description:  AHC. Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in April of 1968. Shown here (R to L) are Penn Central engines #6048 and #6096. Both are SD40's built by GM-EMD for the Pennsylvania Railroad and rated at 3,000 horsepower each. #6048 was constructed in February of 1966, while #6096 was built one month later. In this context, they're rounding the Curve on their way down to East Altoona for yet another helper or pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back.

Description:  Here is a photo taken by Mr. John G. Williams, Jr. It was published originally in the April 1968 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 8. Partial Caption: "On Merger Day plus 10, a westbound Penn Central freight ascends Horse Shoe Curve behind a locomotive team consisting of freshly repainted EMD SD-40 6056 and unrelettered ex-PRR Geep calves. Initially at least, new 'two worms in love' PC logo is eing carried in white on nose and flanks." Shown here (L to R) are Penn Central engines #6056, #3816-B, and #3835-B. All were built by GM-EMD for the Pennsylvania Railroad. #6056 is an SD40 built in February of 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower. #3816 and #3835 are both GP9 B-units rated at 1,750 horsepower each; #3816 was built in November of 1957, while #3835 was constructed in October of 1959.

Description:  AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 May 1969. Shown here (L to R) are Penn Central Railroad engines #2233, #6066, #6077, and another unit whose number is not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD for the Pennsylvania Railroad; their PRR road numbers were the same. #2233 is a GP-30 built in April of 1963, rated at 2,250 horsepower, and presently on display (in Conrail colors!) at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. #6066 and #6077 are both SD-40's built in February of 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower each. Here, they are pulling a TrucTrain around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, Pittsburgh, and points West.

Shown here (L to R) are some of what used to be Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Car Shops, the two-track mainline through Altoona, as well as several freight trains awaiting crews and engines to pull them up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Awaiting permission to proceed is a westbound merchandise freight train, headed by PC engine #6076. Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge.

Description:  PC Power. Here is an original photo that I took near Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, on 5 June 1975. Shown here (L to R) are Penn Central Railroad engines #6278 and #2297. Both were built by GM-EMD. #6278 is an SD40 and #2297 is a GP35. They're pulling an eastbound merchandise freight (with autoracks) and are about to cross State Route 829 ~ just off of US Route 22, East of Huntingdon. The mountains of the Juniata River Valley dominate the distance.
