Title:  PC 2256, GP-35, 1968
Description:  Birmingham. Here is an original photo that I took of a Penn Central Railroad train near Birmingham, Pennsylvania, during May of 1968. Shown here are PC engine #2256 and Southern Pacific Railroad engine #4068. Both were built by GM-EMD. #2256 is a radio-equipped GP-35 built in May of 1964 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #4068 is a GP-20 built in 1962 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They are pulling a westbound autorack train. Lots of new Chrysler products on-board! Also visible on the right are my Penn State geology buddies George Howorth and John "Rob" Powanda. (Many thanks to Mr. James Taylor for identifying the Southern Pacific unit!)

Description:  Here is page 40 of a 96-page monograph entitled "Power To Burn: Smoke, Steam, & Cinders" that was edited by James M. Shmfer and published during 1976. Photo Caption: "Bearing the insignia of the Penn Central Railroad, engines No. 2293 and No. 8098 head westbound out of Altoona with a 'mi{ed' freight on the night of July 2, 1976, bound for Conway Yards." Both locomotives were built by GM-EMD. #2293 is a GP35 built for the Pennsylvania Railroad in June of 1964 and rated at 2,500 HP, while #8098 is a GP38-2 built in February of 1973 and rated at 2,000 HP. Description:  PC Power. Here is an original photo that I took near Mapleton, Pennsylvania, on 5 June 1975. Shown here (L to R) are Penn Central Railroad engines #6278 and #2297. Both were built by GM-EMD. #6278 is an SD40 and #2297 is a GP35. They're pulling an eastbound merchandise freight (with autoracks) and are about to cross State Route 829 ~ just off of US Route 22, East of Huntingdon. The mountains of the Juniata River Valley dominate the distance.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "Horseshoe Curve." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Penn Central GP35 2309 growls up Pennsylvania's famous Horseshoe Curve westbound with a merchandise freight. The curve, located west of Altoona on the former Pennsylvania RR mainline to Pittsburgh, was opened to traffic in February 1854. This scene was taken during the Penn Central era, September 1970. Photo: Carl H. Sturner Collection." Shown here (R to L) are Penn Central engines #2309 and #2387. Both are GP35's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. Also visible is four-track Signal Bridge #2416.

Description:  Altoona Action. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1968. Shown here are Penn Central Railroad engines #6171, #2330, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. #6171 is an SD45 built by GM-EMD in December of 1967 and rated at 3,600 horsepower. #2330 is a GP35 built by GM-EMD in January of 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They're pulling a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Wave to the engineman!
