Description:
FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 24 July 1948. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #809 and #5522. Both were built in Juniata. #809 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" constructed during May of 1917 and retired in October of 1948, while #5522 is a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" built in May of 1946 and retired March of 1952. They're about to enter one of the Gallitzin Tunnels with a passenger train bound for Johnstown and points West. Once past the tunnel, #809 will be uncoupled and head back down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona for yet another helper run. This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection.

Engine #952 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during January of 1918 and retired in June of 1957. Engine #4530 is an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S in August of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in January of 1942, and retired in September of 1953. And engine #4179 is a B-6SB built in Juniata in March of 1924 and retired in 1955.

Here is a photo and a brief article that were published originally in the Monday, 7 November 1966, issue of the "Altoona Mirror." Partial Caption: "Fifty Years Ago Sunday ~ It was 50 years ago, Nov. 6, 1916, that the above disastrous freight wreck occurred near the Wye Switches at Duncansville. An eastbound freight train, No. 2736, went out of control descending the New Portage branch from Gallitzin to Hollidaysburg and ran away to crash into engines, Nos. 2477, 2759, 2665, and 971, standing near the Wye Switches. Seven trainmen were killed in the wreck." At the left, note the "Standing of the Crews" for the Pennsylvania Railroad's Pittsburgh and Middle Divisons.
