Parked in the Erecting & Machine Shop storage yard is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5891, an EP-22 built by GM-EMD in April of 1950 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. Volkmer. Here is an original 35mm color slide by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 1959. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5821 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5821 was constructed in February of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. |
