Description:
Volkmer. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken near Pinecroft, Pennsylvania, on 16 April 1959. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5823 and #5813. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, rated at 2,500 HP each, and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of service. In this context, they're passing under the Riggle's Gap Bridge with a mixed-cargo freight train on its way from Altoona to Enola. Slide produced and distributed by the Lake Shore Railway Historical Society.

Pulling a westbound freight at the left are (R to L) Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9609 and #9617; both are AF-16's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. Description:
Sweetland. Here is the third of three duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by David R. Sweetland that were taken in November of 1960. Shown near Pinecroft (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9605 and three more "AF" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9605 is an AF-15 constructed in 1950 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. In this context, they're about to pass under the Riggle's Gap Bridge on their way to Altoona.

Pinecroft. Here is an original photo that I took near Pinecroft, Pennsylvania, on 26 June 1965. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5902, #5857, and #5859. All were built by GM-EMD. #5902 is an EP-22 built in March of 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. #5857 and #5859 are EP-20's built in February of 1948 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. They're rockin' 'n' rollin' with a 12-car passenger train to Altoona and points West. The time is 1:58 P.M.

All are EF-22's built by EMD in 1963 and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. They are pulling a 160-car eastbound mixed-cargo freight train with caboose #477243. This photo was taken at the Route 483 Bridge. Up to October of 2010, at least, #2249 was in active excursion service with the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Maryland, as number "501."

Up to March of 2014, at least, #2206 was in active revenue service: first as Palouse River and Coulee City Railroad's "3004" in Walla Walla, Washington; later as Webb Asset Management Company's "3023" in Wallula, Washington.

The space between the trains and the utility poles was once the right-of-way for the Altoona & Logan Valley Electric Railway's double-tracked line linking Altoona and Tyrone. They're pulling a 95-car ore train (with N-8 cabin car #478170) to Altoona and points West. The roadway paralleling the tracks was once the right-of-way for the Altoona & Logan Valley Electric Railway's double-tracked line linking Tyrone and Altoona. The line was partially washed-out in the great St. Patrick's Day Floods of 1936 and never rebuilt. Photo taken from the Riggle's Gap Bridge.
