Description:  Volkmer. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken near Pinecroft, Pennsylvania, on 16 April 1959. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5823 and #5813. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, rated at 2,500 HP each, and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of service. In this context, they're passing under the Riggle's Gap Bridge with a mixed-cargo freight train on its way from Altoona to Enola. Slide produced and distributed by the Lake Shore Railway Historical Society.

All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9605 is an AF-15 constructed in 1950 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. In this context, they're about to pass under the Riggle's Gap Bridge on their way to Altoona.

They're rockin' 'n' rollin' with a 12-car passenger train to Altoona and points West. The time is 1:58 P.M.

Up to October of 2010, at least, #2249 was in active excursion service with the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Maryland, as number "501."

The roadway paralleling the tracks was once the right-of-way for the Altoona & Logan Valley Electric Railway's double-tracked line linking Tyrone and Altoona.
