Album Info:Here is the "Overview" of David Fritz & A. Berle Clemensen's 132-page special study entitled "Pennsylvania Main Line Canal: Juniata And Western Divisions." It was published originally by the National Park Service, US Department of the Interior, in February of 1993 ~ and later republished by Forgotten Books in 2018. "Despite the fact that the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal did not generate sufficient tolls to make it a paying proposition, it did have a tremendous economic impact on the state. It opened the western part of the state to settlement and promoted the rapid growth of towns along the route, furnished merchants with a cheap distribution system both within the state and to the region west of Pennsylvania, and provided thousands of persons with employment. When considered in those terms, the Main Line Canal was a huge success." (Page 17) Also included are two postal cards of watercolor paintings by Philip J. Hoffmann showing typical Canal scenes.
