Both locomotives are products of the PRR's Juniata Shops. #3710 is an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in May of 1919 and retired in August of 1956, while #6769 is an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in September of 1930 and retired in August of 1955. This photo was taken quite soon after the accident, witness the steam from rain falling on the still-hot firebox! Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #612, K-4SA (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata as a K-4S during April of 1917, later equipped with a front-end throttle and reclassified as a K-4SA, and retired in April of 1958 after 41 years of faithful service. According to Mr. Robert Hess, "This photo was taken on October 20, 1957, during a steam excursion sponsored by the Branford Electric Railway Association. No. 612 replaced a GG1 which handled the train from Penn Station, NY to South Amboy, NJ. The train then proceeded over the New York & Long Branch RR to Sea Girt, then the Freehold branch to Jamesburg, and finally the Amboy branch returning to South Amboy, where a GG1 took over again" for the return journey to New York's Penn Station. Here is a photo of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6744, an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an M-1A in July of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in February of 1947, and retired in September of 1959 after 29 years of faithful service.
