Here are several duplicate 35mm B&W slides that were taken by Mr. Fred McLeod at or nearby the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania. All of them come from a slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. Also included are several images from the same set via the William E. Burket Collection. [Before "Blackout": 42 Entries]

FM. Here is a duplicate 35mm B&W slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1949. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5827 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BP-60's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5827 was built in October of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. They're pulling a passenger train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. FM. Here is a duplicate 35mm B&W slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 19 April 1948. Photo Caption: "Two K4s and a T1 take the 'Metropolitan' up to Gallitzin Summit near the Horseshoe Curve. April, 1948." In the lead is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #612, a K-4SA (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata as a K-4S during April of 1917, later equipped with a front-end throttle and reclassified as a K-4SA, and retired in April of 1958 after 41 years of faithful service. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3674, #5851, and an EP-20 "B" unit whose road number is not recorded. #3674 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1918 and retired in October of 1955. #5851 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in August of 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They're pulling a passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the steam locomotive will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further assignment. Wave to the Firemen! Photo Caption: "Triple-header K-4 Pacifics on upgrade near Bennington Curve. Mail Train No. 95 with 25 cars. Nov., 1950." Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5347 and two more locomotives whose road numbers are not recorded. All are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics." #5347 was built in Juniata during May of 1918 and retired in December of 1955 after 37 years of faithful service. In this context, these locomotives are rockin' 'n' rollin' up the Allegheny Mountains and will soon pass through one of the Gallitzin Tunnels, after which the lead two engines will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further assignment. Photo Caption: "3-unit Electro-Motive pusher on upgrade as viewed two miles above the Horseshoe. Fall, 1950." Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9688 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EH-15's built/by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9688 was constructed as an EH-15 in February of 1949, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and retired in November of 1964 after just 15 years of service.
