"The Pennsylvania Railroad had to route its New York-Chicago train via Richmond, Va. In many sectors, railway and highway traffic stopped dead; wire communications failed. Airplanes and radios became the principal links between the hundreds of islands that made up the Eastern United States." (Page 7) Dates: 17-19 March 1936.

Partial Text: "At the flood's peak, those who ventured back into [Johnstown's] streets in boats took pains to look at the exterior of the First National Bank building. There they spied the familiar black line with the engraved words: 'High Water Mark, May, 31, 1889.' Just a foot and a half below, the dirty waters of March, 1936, lapped at the building's side."
