Description:  Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during May of 1967. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6508 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #6508 is a GF-25A built by General Electric in April of 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They're passing under the new 12th Street Footbridge on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop storage yard in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1967. Prominent here is PRR engine #9914, an AS-10AMS built by the American Locomotive Company as number "8485" in May of 1952, rated at 1,000 horsepower, and later renumbered "9914" in preparation for the Pennsylvania-New York Central merger. Brush Mountain dominates the distance.

Description:  Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1967. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4270 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EP-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #4270 was constructed as number "5805" in July of 1952 and later renumbered "4270" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. In this context, this A-A-A set is waiting for a helper engine to couple on before pulling a passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh and points West. Partially visible at the left is the "new" 12th Street Footbridge; partially visible at the right are two structures that are part of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. ("PrrFan18n")

Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6329 and #6061. #6329 is an AF-30 built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower. #6061 is an EF-30A built by GM-EMD in February of 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower. In this context, they're pulling a freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Partially visible at the left are two structures belonging to the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops.

Description:  Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken West of Altoona, Pennsylvania, during January of 1968. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6180 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 3,600 horsepower each. #6180 is an EF-36 built in December of 1967. They have just rounded the Horseshoe Curve and are on their way down the Allegheny Mountains to Enola, Pennsylvania, with a merchandise freight train.

Partially visible at the right is PC engine #5577, an RS-3 built by the American Locomotive Company for the PRR as number "8477" in January of 1952 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. The exact date is not recorded.

All were built by GM-EMD. #7219 is a GP9 built in November of 1957 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. Slide Mount Annotation: "Train #50 arriving 90 minutes late in Altoona." What a sorry sight ... the train's using an E7B that was built in the late 1940's ... the nose of the E8A has lost most of its paint ... even the "Geep" has only one working headlight ... gone are the grand old days! Description:  Altoona Action. Here is a photo that was published originally in Dan Cupper's 1996 monograph entitled "The Pennsylvania Railroad: Its Place In History 1846-1996," page 14. Partial Caption: "With the buildings of the Altoona Machine Shop complex behind, a pair of Baldwin road freight 'sharknose' diesels leads a train of refrigerator cars west on the main line to Pittsburgh." Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9710 and another "BF" Class unit whose road number is not recorded. #9710 is a BF-16 built in December of 1950, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 16 years of service.
