Description:
Altoona Action. Here is the first of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides via Al Chione that were taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in March of 1948. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5756 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are AP-20's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5756 was built in November of 1947, later regeared for freight service and reclassified as an AFP-20, and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. They've stopped under the 12th Street Footbridge with an eastbound passenger train, and are presently changing crews and discharging & picking-up passengers at the Station. Note that the water tank in the second unit is being refilled.

Altoona Action. Here is a photo by Thomas Lynam that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during February of 1949. It was published originally in Mr. Robert L. Emerson's 1984 book entitled "Allegheny Passage: An Illustrated History Of Blair County," page 75. Photo Caption: "The sight of clouds billowing out of a passing steam engine vanished shortly after these two photos were made, as the newer diesel engine edged its older sister out of commission. Both the J-1a steam engine (not shown) and the EMD diesels (bottom) ~ nicknamed 'covered wagons' ~ were photographed in Altoona's Pennsy yard in 1949." Shown here (L to R) are the 7th Street Bridge, a sanding tower, a vest-pocket coaling tipple, and a watering point ~ the latter two now obsolete with the passing of the "Age of Steam." Also visible on the right is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9685, an EH-15 built by EMD in February of 1949 and rated at 1,500 horsepower.

PRR Baldwin Switcher, c. 1950
Description:
Altoona Action. Here is an original photo depicting a Pennsylvania Railroad yard locomotive and its crew at some undefined place and time. Shown here is a BS-10A engine built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1950 and rated at 1,000 horsepower. Since this locomotive was built in 1950, and since the scenery looks a lot like that in Altoona, it could very well be that this photo was taken in or around Altoona on a winter's day sometime during or after the midpoint of the 20th Century. This photo was given to me by my friend, Betty Burket, whose husband ~ Mr. Guy Burket ~ worked as a brakeman in the Hollidaysburg Yards for many years. He passed suddenly on 24 May 1973.

In this context, this A-B-A set is pulling a manifest freight train past ANTIS Tower (not shown) and will soon pause at WORKS Tower (4th Street, Altoona) for a crew change. Shown at the right is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5870, an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in April of 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. Along with another "EP" Class unit (not pictured), it's passing under the Train Shed with an eastbound passenger train, and will soon come to a stop both to change crews and discharge & pick-up passengers at the Station. Also visible are two unidentified "EF" Class locomotives pulling a westbound mixed-cargo freight train a couple of tracks over, as well as portions of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops in the distance. The gray-colored building pictured in the center is the Railway Express Office; the two-story red-brick building to its left is the PRR's Freight Station. Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1955. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5824 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5824 was built in May of 1947 and retired in April of 1962 after just 15 years of service. In this context, they've just passed under the 12th Street Footbridge and are returning to East Altoona after serving as "pushers" on a freight train headed up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they were uncoupled to head back down "The Mountain" for yet another helper/pusher run.

All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9611 was built in May of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. They have just passed under the 12th Street Footbridge and are on their way to the Eastbound Receiving Yard with a mineral train. The structures in the background are part of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shop complex. The exact date is not recorded.

Both were built by GM-EMD. #9838 is an EFP-15 built in 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. Note that the fresh train crew is waiting for a front-end helper unit to couple on, and then they will proceed up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Johnstown, Pittsburgh, and points West. Shown here is Pittsburgh & West Virginia engine #40, an AS-616 road switcher built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in May of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and leased to the Pennsylvania Railroad. The PRR later purchased it, renumbered it "8114," and retired it September of 1967 after just 16 years of combined service. Altoona Action. Here is the first of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides via Al Chione that were taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1963. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9545 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #9545 is an EF-15 built by GM-EMD as an EH-15 in October of 1948, rated at 1,500 horsepower, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15, and retired in December of 1963 after just 15 years of revenue service. This A-B-A set it pulling a mixed-cargo freight train under the 7th Street Bridge on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

Altoona Action. Here is the second of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides via Al Chio-ne that were taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1963. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8669, #8668, and #8679. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8669 was constructed in March of 1958, #8668 in February of 1958, and #8679 in April of 1958. They're serving as tail-end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train that's heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper-pusher run up "The Mountain." Note the "Through Service" cabin car with the yellow cupola.

Shown here (F to R) are PRR engine #7089 and four more "Geeps" whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EFS-17M's built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7089 was constructed in November of 1956. They're braking a fully-loaded mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve on its way to the Eastbound Receiving Yard in Altoona. Wave to the Engineman!

Both are GF-25's built by General Electric and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #2529 was constructed in September of 1964, while #2544 was built in February of 1965. Pulling a single N-5C cabin car, they have just passed under the 7th Street Bridge on their way to Hollidaysburg ~ where they'll pick-up a string of new and rebuilt freight cars and pull them up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West. #8663 and #8675 will lead, while #8655 and #8676 will push from the rear but uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."
